Project Summary to date

New Sharlston was built to provide housing for the workers at the Sharlston Colliery which opened in 1865.  It consists basically of two long streets of terraced houses.  One is called Crossley Street after the owners of the pit - Crossley Carpets of Halifax, and the other is Long Row.  There are approximately 160 dwellings in total.

UK Coal has received approval for outline planning permission to develop part of the old colliery site.  The development will be new build residential domestic properties.  As part of the planning process a 106 agreement has been included that will cover the cost of extending the gas network to the area.

East Surry Pipelines (ESP) has been selected to complete the gas mains extension.  The price of this work will total no more than stated in the 106 agreement.  Works included in the price are as follows:

  1. Mains laid in public highway / private land that would allow all New Sharlston households to take a connection.  Capacity of this new network includes the proposed new build development
  2. Service from the main to each residential dwelling that wishes to obtain a connection
  3. External mounted meter box and standard credit meter
  4. Reinstatement of all surfaces on completion of trenching work

The 106 agreement was signed and completed on the 7 May 2008.  Under this agreement UK Coal will pay the appropriate statutory undertaker (ESP) within four months of this date.

As of week beginning 7 July 2008, UK Coal and ESP have agreed in principle contract terms and aim to have the contract in place week beginning 14 July 2008.  Once the contracts are agreed ESP will commence with the preparation of installing the new main, this will involve access arrangements for public and privately owned land.

For the residents there will be no cost for them connecting to the new network and CES in conjunction with WMDC are aiming to have a package of assistance available to cover most circumstances for assistance installing gas central heating.  This assistance will include links to existing funding schemes and subsidised tendered prices.

The target date for commencement of the gas mains work is September 2008, although this could change if delays are experienced within the contract stage.
